Asia-Pacific Network (APN) for Global Change Research
APN is an inter-governmental network for the promotion of global change research and links between science and policymaking within the Asia-Pacific Region. APN's 21 member countries include the USA. APN launched a program entitled CAPaBLE (Scientific Capacity Building and Enhancement for Sustainable Development in Developing Countries) to enhance scientific capacity in developing countries to help improve their decisionmaking in global change research, with emphasis on climate change and water and food security. CCB (Consortium for Capacity Building) received a small grant from CAPaBLE (with supplemental funding from NOAA) to convene a prototype training workshop for educators in South and Southeast Asia. The workshop, held in March 2006 in Bangkok, Thailand, gathered together educators from different disciplines to build educational capacity at national and regional levels on seasonality and environmental hazards.
The Workshop
Selected educators from universities in Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, India and China gathered for four days in Bangkok to learn how to create a curriculum that will help to educate other educators in different disciplines on how climate anomalies and climate change affect seasonality and how this in turn affects human activities and settlements. The workshop also developed a regional network of educators for information sharing and awareness raising. The Climate Affairs template was used to structure the training sessions. More specifically, this involved coverage in the following areas: climate science, climate impacts and societies and ecosystems, climate policy and law, climate politics, climate economics, and climate ethics and equity. It is expected that the workshop will encourage wider exposure to climate change impacts to administrators and colleagues, and synergistically, to their students.
